the artHound(s)

The artHound blog began in 2008, was lost in 2012 in a server crash, and restarted shortly afterward. It has been neglected since 2018, when social media seemed to garner more attention. Still, to me, its content is worthwhile: portfolio art in joancolbert.com often links to posts written during its creation.

This blog, the artHound, will now remain static – archived, as such. For more current writing and images visit joancolbert.com/posts

basement hibiscus

Once again, the overwintering hibiscus provides some warmth and color to a basement that is normally devoid of both – and just in time for the holidays!

Maybe it was inspiration (or guilt) brought on by the Sugar Plum Tour or maybe it was feeling up to the challenge of tackling the attic crawlspace, but, after several years of minimal December decor, I decided to deck the halls. Although Christmas arrived before the tree came out of hiding, I did manage to brighten up the house with some old favorites.

Crows!

2017novcrows lores

Opportunities to watch the crows heading for their nightly roost have been plentiful this fall – one of the perks of living within their usual flight pattern. Late on Sunday they gathered for a while across the street. It was mesmerizing!

On Portage Path today (and right outside my front door) – members of the Northern Cheyenne Nation walk the portage with students from The Lippmann School, Portage Path CLC and Emmanuel Christian Academy.

For many years this hand painted, steel sign marked the portage, which is now designated by cast arrowheads along the route.

Driving solo means that this is the best shot I could get of this fascinating transport vehicle. Surprisingly, this is actually a trailer being pulled by an equally laden truck on North Street in Akron, Ohio.

Research on the umbelliferae/apiaceae plant family must have put an invitation out to the universe. This formidable Wild Parsnip, Pastinaca sativa, appeared in the side garden and is now approaching a height of five feet. The ladybug can enjoy it for a while, but its stay is temporary – the other herbs are feeling bullied!

A recent addition to the As Potent as a Charm series of poisonous botanicals, Suspects, is inspired by Castor Bean, Ricinus communis, with a nod to the 1978 ‘umbrella murder’ of Bulgarian dissident, Georgi Markov, in London. Neurotoxins found in the seeds are 500 times more poisonous than cyanide.
