A fresh look for the studio and studio entry hall: changed the paint from white to a color that I call Billy Grey. The look varies depending on time of day and light source; so far, it’s always calm and pleasing, and plays well with the framed artwork.

Thank you to all who stopped by during yesterday’s Open Studio – I hope you enjoyed the afternoon as much as I did. Who knew that sunshine, wind, sleet and hail would each make an appearance?! Springtime in Ohio!

The third floor of Summit Artspace was a festive place to be on the Thursday evening that Leadership Akron held their holiday party. Most of the studios and galleries remained open for the event.

A few of us outside the BOX gallery early in the evening:

And how awesome is this?! At some point the photographer snapped a candid image of visitors just inside my studio doorway:

Sometimes cutting blocks is simply . . . cutting blocks.

Summit Artspace is beginning 2015 with new building/gallery hours, switching from the Thursday through Saturday schedule to weekends only. Joan Colbert Studios will now be open Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. As usual, the studio is also open during opening receptions, artwalks and by prior arrangement. Stop in!

After days of stormy weather and flooding downpours, Sunday had all the hallmarks of springtime perfection – just in time for this year’s Open Studio. An afternoon of friends and family, conversation, art and goodies – what’s not to like?! Many thanks to all who stopped by!

How appropriate that the Get Fuzzy calendar page provided me with an inspiring bit of motivation during this crazy week of Open Studio preparation . . .

I think I’ve found my new mantra!

The cards are printed, the emails sent and the whirlwind preparations are underway!

It’s been nearly twenty years since I began hosting an open studio each spring, starting as one artist among many who participated in the Cleveland-based NOVA Open Studio Days. Following NOVA’s demise a group of Akron artists kept a local version of the event going, but only for a few years. Apparently my enthusiasm never waned – for many years, with only a couple exceptions, I’ve continued the spring open studio tradition on my own. Looks like the hounds are ready for visitors!

Every year there are a few artwalks that find the galleries in Summit Artspace between shows. Although the first floor was dark Saturday evening, the third floor studios were open for visitors.

The Downtown Artwalk is held on the first Saturday of each month. A visit to the Downtown Akron Partnership site will provide you with updated information on venues and artists. Stop in during the next artwalk on Saturday, June 7!

A month ago the studio was in complete disarray under a coating of soot, plaster and drywall dust from the wall repair.  With a new coat of paint (still deciding whether I like the addition of subtle color as opposed to white), it’s sporting a slightly new look. Now, to get back to (art)work!
