The studio was in holiday mode for the last artwalk of 2014 – even the blackbirds got in the act. Two handmade ornaments were available this year, a felted wool crow and and his wood, wire and glass cohort.

kenmore high school madrigal singers

The Kenmore High School Madrigals put everyone in the holiday mood with their vocal arrangements of classic carols, while pop-up artists Toni Billick, Leona Bowser, Andrea Cistone, Eileen Matias, Deborah Shapiro, Anne Snyder and Mila Susnjar added some visual variety to the mix.

The weekend following Thanksgiving has traditionally been the start of holiday shopping, but many retailers now welcome shoppers before the dinner dishes are done. American Express started promoting their trademarked Small Business Saturday in 2010 as a shop local event between Black Friday and Cyber Monday and, if the visitors to Summit Artspace are any indication, the respite from the malls and big box stores is a welcome one. Crafty Mart vendors set up at three locations in downtown Akron, one of which was Summit Artspace.

As the booths closed for the day the galleries opened with receptions for new exhibits: Kaleidoscope in the Summit Artspace Gallery and Black and White in the BOX gallery. A third reception celebrated the release of Present Tense, a contemporary art book from Artists of Rubber City.

Scheduling everything on a holiday weekend was brilliant. Next up: the December Artwalk!

Typical of October, the weather was chilly and changeable this week, but Friday turned out to be picture perfect for some outdoor creativity. Workshop participants experimented with a variety of monotype techniques using water based ink, plexiglass plates and a variety of implements for applying and removing ink. The results were spectacular!

Many more images are available on the Don Drumm Studios & Gallery page on Facebook. Mary took some great photos, including the one at the top of this post.
Thanks to everyone who attended – it was fun!

The October Artwalk was abuzz with beginnings and endings . . .

Saturday, October 4, was the last day to vote for favorites in the Akron Art Prize. Despite a non-functioning mobile app, plenty of people were able to vote at the kiosks at each participating gallery and still have time to head to the museum for the awards party. Saturday also saw the closing of Paranormal Paranoia: the other side of Tattoo Art(ists) in the BOX gallery and the last opportunity to take a chance on the tattoo gift certificate from Kustom Culture Tattoos. The Akron Society of Artists gallery re-opened with Akron Society of Artists Paint en Plein Air.

Once again, Penthouse Pop-ups appeared outside the studios on the third floor of Summit Artspace. The October artists, Lin Anne Luciano Fiore, Dena Gershon, Bernadette Houk, Kathie Jandrey and Lauren McIntosh brought some variety to the artwalk with their fiber, ceramics, oil paintings, sculpture and jewelry.

blue eyed dog boutique

It will be a little while before the trees take on their vibrant autumn colors, but the changing season is already quite evident in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The glorious weather was a bonus for today’s little noontime excursion to Peninsula to deliver artwork to Elizabeth at the Blue Eyed Dog. Co-owners, Elizabeth Burgy Workman  and her sister, Leslie Hampshire, have filled their shop with an eclectic mix of original art, handmade jewelry and marvelous vintage and up-cycled items.

In keeping with the dog motif, I made sure to include the block print, Ready to Walk, along with a selection of additional block prints and seasonal cards.

2014 porchrokr map

A bit on the fringes, but set-up couldn’t have been easier!

What a glorious Saturday for art, music and food in the neighborhood! This year’s PorchRokr, presented by the Highland Square Neighborhood Association, with lots of help from volunteers and sponsors, highlighted a walkable area of west Akron just southeast of the square. Trolleys were running throughout the day for those whose feet needed a rest.

It was a perfect day for visiting with friends and neighbors and enjoying a touch of fall in the front garden.

PorchRokr, the Highland Square festival that features bands on the porch and art on the lawn, is coming up this Saturday. Visitors can purchase Square Cards, good for art, food or music from participating vendors.

This year’s Square Card items from Joan Colbert Studios are tiny pieces of original art (ACEOs – art cards editions and originals). Measuring just 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches, most are mixed media or prints. Choose your favorite!

paranormal paranoia     2014 akron art prize     penthouse pop-ups

What a fine night for an artwalk! Summit Artspace was bustling during the September Downtown Akron Artwalk. The first floor gallery featured Akron Art Prize artwork while Paranormal Paranoia opened at the BOX gallery on the third floor. Adding to the fun on the third floor were four pop-up artists, a tattoo artist and the usual open studios. Yes, we were definitely open!

open!
