miller horns display

Nearly two years after Miller Horns’ death students at Akron’s North High School will be able to learn about  one of their alumni. Thanks to fellow artist and friend, Terry Klausman, two display cases have been dedicated to Miller’s life and work. Terry gathered the artwork, clippings and objects and we spent two afternoons installing the pieces. Miller would be pleased.

There was something about one of the photos that accompanied the Record Courier’s Group Ten Gallery article that made me take a second look. The image was a behind the scenes view of judges Christine Havice, Ph.D., Director, School of Art, Kent State University, and Lou Zona, Ph.D., Director of the Butler Institute of American Art, considering an entry that, in this instance, looked very familiar.

A second image left no doubt that the artwork under scrutiny was Aconitum, which was indeed juried into the show.

This moment, or one similar, could be from any juried exhibition, but, with my prints in the supporting role, I think it’s pretty special. Many thanks to the photographer!

Two new exhibits, just in time for mid-summer viewing, opened at Summit Artspace on Friday, July 11, 2014.

streetscapes: akron in plein air

Streetscapes: Akron in Plein Air was on display in time for last week’s Downtown Akron Artwalk, but awards were kept secret until last night’s opening reception. Once again, Brian Shellito organized both the downtown painting event and the exhibit itself. Images of artists and artwork are available on his Streetscapes: Akron in Plein Air page.

On the third floor, Artists of Rubber City opened the 24th Annual Juried Show in the BOX gallery. Selected artwork can be seen online at the BOX gallery page.

Although the annual juried show is now exhibited in the BOX gallery, owned and managed by Artists of Rubber City, for many years it was displayed in outside venues. The following images are from previous juried shows held at Charles Mayer Studios and Gallery and later at the Mocha Maiden Gallery.

group ten gallery

Group Ten Gallery in Kent opened their first juried show with an evening reception on Friday, June 20, 2014. The call for entries was answered by 67 artists with 124 pieces entered. Eligible work was limited to 2D artwork, excluding photography. Esteemed judges, Christine Havice, Ph.D., Director, School of Art, Kent State University, and Lou Zona, Ph.D., Director of the Butler Institute of American Art, chose 58 pieces by 42 artists.

Among the included work is Aconitum, my monkshood themed set of five relief prints. It’s such an honor to be a part of such a strong exhibit of traditional and contemporary art by northeast Ohio artists. A list of included art and artists is available on the Group Ten Gallery website.

art at the farm

For the third year the Barberton Community Foundation and the Barberton Historical Society presented Art at the Farm, featuring the work of both student and professional artists, in the O. C. Barber pig barn. The Barberton Community Foundation has a collection of photos, including some spectacular exterior views of this impressive building, on flickr – take a look!

After days of stormy weather and flooding downpours, Sunday had all the hallmarks of springtime perfection – just in time for this year’s Open Studio. An afternoon of friends and family, conversation, art and goodies – what’s not to like?! Many thanks to all who stopped by!

The cards are printed, the emails sent and the whirlwind preparations are underway!

It’s been nearly twenty years since I began hosting an open studio each spring, starting as one artist among many who participated in the Cleveland-based NOVA Open Studio Days. Following NOVA’s demise a group of Akron artists kept a local version of the event going, but only for a few years. Apparently my enthusiasm never waned – for many years, with only a couple exceptions, I’ve continued the spring open studio tradition on my own. Looks like the hounds are ready for visitors!

Following a three week hiatus, the galleries at Summit Artspace are open! With new exhibits in four spaces the building was positively humming during the Friday evening receptions.

Every year there are a few artwalks that find the galleries in Summit Artspace between shows. Although the first floor was dark Saturday evening, the third floor studios were open for visitors.

The Downtown Artwalk is held on the first Saturday of each month. A visit to the Downtown Akron Partnership site will provide you with updated information on venues and artists. Stop in during the next artwalk on Saturday, June 7!

summit artspace studio doors

There were three floors of activities at Summit Artspace for the April edition of the Downtown Akron Artwalk – three gallery exhibits and eight studio artists were joined by Theatre All Night Long on the second floor. It’s always fun to catch up with patrons and friends and a pleasure to meet people who are just discovering the artwalk and Summit Artspace.

Given that it was still daylight for much of the evening, observant visitors might have noticed the small installation outside of the building. Although it’s been there for months, the little diorama seems none the worse for its time outdoors. The artist is a mystery, at least to me, which only adds to its allure. It’s always a delight to walk past and see that this small piece of outside(r) art is still in place.
