bench

“Winter will pass, the days will lengthen, the ice will melt in the pasture pond. The song sparrow will return and sing, the frogs will awake, the warm wind will blow again. All these sights and sounds and smells will be yours to enjoy, Wilbur – this lovely world, these precious days . . . “ E. B. White, Charlotte’s Web

Ohio winters proved too much for the bench that once belonged to artist Claire Cressler. Replacing the top has been on my to-do list for a number of years. Initially the plan was for tile, but the weather would again be a factor and the combined weight of the iron base and the tile would make moving it inside too difficult. Plan two was for wood painted a deep shade of red, but I liked the look of the plywood and trim too much to cover them up – and both were just rustic enough to accommodate some quick lettering along the edge.

Although this is a hopeful passage, there’s a strong feeling of melancholy, assuaged by the reminder that the world really is lovely, our days are indeed precious and, yes, spring will come again. It’s a pleasure to live with Mr. White’s words.

clivia

Sad news and a sudden loss – and feeling bereft over the death of a friend and fellow artist. I’d like to think that today’s appearance of a bright orange bloom on the clivia is Chris saying that she’s still around. The surprise touch of color is surely her spirit attempting to brighten up this somber day.

Rest in Peace, Chris Paringer

Easter hound

Oh, the hound and the hares . . . thanks to Carrie for this wonderful Easter card!!

bernie sanders

Blue skies, spring in the air and Bernie Sanders in Akron, Ohio! Lucky for all of us waiting in line the temperatures were downright balmy for this time of year. Sanders’ campaign appearance, originally scheduled for Cleveland, was on short notice, but well worth attending. A succinct recap of the event is in The Devilstrip.

Big Love Akron 2016, a community celebration

This year’s event is its first at Summit Artspace with three floors of local music, art, food and much more!

crowsoverglendale

Daylight hours are increasing noticeably, as evidenced by the brilliant blue sky, rather than darkness, on the way home from the studio. With evening’s approach the crows began to gather in the trees of Glendale Cemetery, and, odd as it may seem, the sight was magical!

no words

sunday morning with bill

Sunday Morning with Bill, collage

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

hibiscus

For several years now, the overwintering hibiscus has brightened the cellar with a few holiday blooms. This year Christmas came and went without even a bud. Just a week later I caught a glimpse of scarlet on a smaller plant that usually stays leafy green all winter, and, sure enough, it was flowering – just in time to welcome 2016. Happy New Year!

agc 2015 calendar

Each year Academy Graphic Communication, Inc., produces a 52weeks/52works calendar featuring the work of Northeast Ohio Artists. The variety of artwork and attractive layout make this my favorite weekly calendar. I was quite pleased to be included on the Notes page in this year’s calendar, but dismayed that I completely missed the entry deadline for the 2016 version – and unhappy that there will be an empty spot on my desk throughout the coming year.

The third floor of Summit Artspace was a festive place to be on the Thursday evening that Leadership Akron held their holiday party. Most of the studios and galleries remained open for the event.

A few of us outside the BOX gallery early in the evening:

And how awesome is this?! At some point the photographer snapped a candid image of visitors just inside my studio doorway:
