miscellany

Each fall, usually when the first frost is imminent, the hibiscus moves into its winter home, AKA the basement. Protesting the fact that it has not been relocated to a balmy, southern climate, it proceeds to dramatize its fate by dropping leaves and feigning impending death. During the following weeks, it resigns itself to sharing space with paint cans, tools and laundry and sets about greening up for the winter. Looking positively festive, it bloomed on Christmas Day.

The holiday spirit continued into the new year with another bloom welcoming 2015 (and another bud getting started). Winter has its own outdoor beauty, but it’s nice to have a splash of color and a hint of warmer climes secretly brightening the basement.

ruppel's art & paint

Akron’s only remaining independent art supply store is closing its doors on Christmas Eve. A constant presence on Carroll Street since 1970, the business began long before that as Pockrandt’s Paint & Supply. Years ago every entity that had a graphics department had an account at Ruppel’s. While employed at the Akron Public Library and later the City of Akron, trips to Ruppel’s for the necessities: display board, paint, ink and pens, also involved browsing among all of the other goodies. At the time I wouldn’t have believed that I would ever be nostalgic about One Shot Lettering Enamel or sheets of Chartpak Transfer Type – never say never! In recent years I have stopped in whenever I needed my favorite paper (Strathmore series 500 sheets) and mat board (Crescent 1613 rag) – and, yes, I purchased the last three sheets of that board.

Ruppel’s was affected by changes in both the art supply business and their customer base, all of which was covered in Betty Lin-Fisher’s article in the Akron Beacon Journal. Although it’s sad to say good-bye, I wish the best to Harold Ruppel and Steve Rarick and hope our paths cross again.

first snow

Although it’s more than a month early, winter made an appearance in northeast Ohio this week. What a surprise!

The opening receptions continued on the third floor where four additional exhibits are on display. Akron Society of Artists Paint en Plein Air, which officially opened earlier in the month during the Artwalk, fills the ASA Gallery. At the BOX gallery All Monsters Attack!, a group show curated by Ted Mallison, is a paean to pop culture monsters in celebration of Godzilla’s 60th birthday. Temporary walls showcase the Impressions of Holy Trinity Art Show, marking the 100th anniversary of Akron’s Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Fellow studio artist, Katina Pastis Radwanski, deftly redesigned her studio into a gallery for Apron – Interpretations in Painting and Sculpture.

It seems there’s a bit of a theme this week . . .

The next set of prints in the As Potent as a Charm series will focus on Solanaceae, a family of both fierce and friendly plants. All of the chicken’s eggs are in one basket in the first sketch, pairing henbane with eggplant. The layout is complete; eventually it will become a relief print.

The morning after this drawing was finished, the turtle decided to get in on the act. Yertle, AKA Yurt, put to rest any gender debate by producing two eggs of her own. There wasn’t much time to admire them, though – apparently she thought they’d make a good breakfast.

Thanks to Stephen Paternite I feel like I’m living in an enchanted landscape. His infrared photo captures all of May’s springtime enthusiasm with lacy foliage and puffy clouds completely surrounding my big box of house. Forgotten are all of the flaws and tasks waiting to be completed – for the moment it’s like living in wonderland.

How appropriate that the Get Fuzzy calendar page provided me with an inspiring bit of motivation during this crazy week of Open Studio preparation . . .

Memories of Ina Federman will always be colorful ones. She had a strong personality, full of passion for family, for animals, for art and for life. I met Ina over twenty years ago at the Akron Arts Expo where she commissioned a mixed media painting depicting five birds and two cats, all of which shared her home. Over the years we became friends. As her menagerie changed she increased her portrait collection, first with drawings on the mat and later with additional paintings. Ina would be so pleased to know that Shane, her companion cat in assisted living, will continue to reside at the facility, charming residents and employees alike.
