There is something about May: finally it feels that spring has truly arrived, even though it’s been more than five weeks since the official end of winter. Because of this year’s cool temperatures it seems that all of the buds and blossoms have lasted just a bit longer. . . and the show has been marvelous. Some days it’s even possible to appreciate the intense yellow of the flowers popping up in lawn strips around town, but that’s only on some days.

Lola

This spring I am teaching a private class on Tuesday afternoons. Today Diana arrived with a helper, a sweet little girl named Lola! Lola wasn’t too interested in art, but she certainly was pleasant company.

Did you ever hear about the Easter crow?
This awesome egg was created by Abby O.

Look who’s on the Invent Now and Camp Invention Headquarters pages on Facebook! Isaac is reminding everyone of the Early Bird Discount deadline for Camp Invention. How about that!!

The increased hours of daylight and the official start to spring make it possible to catch a little moonlight before the skies darken. While winter wasn’t particularly severe locally, it has shown a reluctance to bow out and let spring take the stage. So far the hint of buds on the silhouetted trees and the (rare) bright blue sky are the only signs that the season is changing. Stay tuned!

winter robin

Seeing the first robin of the year is always a cause for celebration! This robin beat spring’s arrival by almost a month, sharing the date with February’s full moon – the snow moon.

Once again the arrival of the new year was celebrated downtown during First Night Akron. Entertainment and activities for all ages filled the participating venues, including Summit Artspace, where there were three floors of music and art.

This year’s button design was created by artist, Judy Gaiser. She featured a lively, tuxedo-wearing fox at the keys of the Akron Civic Theatre’s Wurlitzer organ.

First Night Akron debuted in 1997, so Judy became the seventeenth artist to create the button image. The complete collection can be viewed here.

Hmmm. . .
according to James Lipton’s An Exaltation of Larks or The Venereal Game, a group of turkeys is a rafter, while a congregation of roosting crows is a murder. Given the season it’s quite possible that this turkey decided it might be safer to hang out with the blackbirds despite the ominous name – after all, most everyone avoids having to eat crow!
