“While unfolding pieces of Connie’s hosta series, started last winter and now, sadly, forever unfinished, I was struck by how effectively each fragment illustrated just how passionately she approached an idea or technique. Connie researched, observed and designed, then edited, adjusted and reworked. Inevitably during the process her signature sparkle and glitz would appear, always with a touch of drama.

Connie’s approach to life, and the afterlife, was not dissimilar: no matter the situation, a little pizzazz is always appropriate!”   Joan Colbert, 2016

Connie Bloom, artist, writer and friend, died today, Monday, August 29, 2016.

“If someone should ever make a Memorial piece in Connie Bloom’s honor it would have to say that this is one grateful woman. She gives gratitude for all she has got, her job, her studio, her creativity, her happiness . . .

‘This came to me, it fell out of the sky.’ ”

When Artists of Rubber City has a sale it’s a good one! Members filled the Transitions Gallery at Summit Artspace with an incredible variety of artwork for this benefit.

mint monotype

Cultivated in herb gardens or cursed for its invasiveness, mint used in monotype printing adds a subtly refreshing scent to the studio. One such print is currently on display in the Artists of Rubber City Members Show.

2016unrealexhibit

The first exhibits of 2016 have opened at Summit Artspace and there are new hours with increased opportunities for viewing.

Ten artists have work in the Summit Artspace Gallery in Unreal – Abstract Art Today. Upstairs, in the BOX gallery, NFS features work from the collections of Artists of Rubber City members. Predictably, the artwork is as varied as the membership. As a member of the group it was interesting to guess who owned what piece(s) before looking at the tags.

An old friend reappeared for the exhibit at the BOX gallery: Trickster Raven, relief print, from the collection of George Reuter. It’s been more than twenty years, but I remember being inspired by the quote, “Raven, the trickster, the missing piece of darkness” from John Straley in The Woman Who Married a Bear.

In the gallery view below the artist is George Reuter. To the left is St. George and the Dragon, an oil pastel on loan from my collection; to the right is an untitled crayon drawing borrowed from Nancy Richards-Davis.

update: October 30, 2015, Akron Beacon Journal review of exhibits

The little kitty caught me in his tractor beam stare and resistance was futile! Spirit World, by Roza Maille, came home with me from the Artists of Rubber City Postcard Show.

It was no surprise that sales were brisk during the Friday evening opening reception – the selection of small original art was incredible. A variety of frames were also available, with proceeds from all purchases benefiting The BOX Gallery. It’s difficult to contain the awesomeness of Spirit World, but this frame comes mighty close!

The Artists of Rubber City Postcard Show continues through May 3, 2015 at The Box Gallery, 140 East Market Street, Akron, Ohio.

Artists of Rubber City announced a benefit event to raise funds for The BOX Gallery and it promises to be fun. Artists were asked to donate handmade postcards, aka 4 x 6 inch art, for a show and sale. The first of my submissions, Thicket, is a monotype, while the second is a bit of mixed media using a windowed envelope with its printed lining, titled The Purloined Letter(s).

the purloined letter(s)

Like Edgar Allan Poe’s purloined letter, the contents are hiding in plain sight. Discerning the message is almost as puzzling as deciphering the meaning of Jacques Lacan’s writings on The Purloined Letter. His quote, “Which is why we cannot say of the purloined letter that, like other objects, it must be or not be in a particular place but that unlike them it will be and not be where it is, wherever it goes.” is lettered on the front. I doubt whether even C. Auguste Dupin could figure out that message.
