It’s a busy Saturday of comings and goings at Summit Artspace!

Gallery schedules will not be in sync for a few months, so the March Artwalk features the closing of Time Capsules in the first floor gallery and the opening of skin{d.e.e.p.} and VS (Versus)::0.02 [gridiron] by Margarita Benitez and Markus Vogl in the BOX gallery.

In addition to the gallery exhibits, Crafty Mart’s Nerdy Pop-up Market amid the third floor open studios make Summit Artspace a must on your artwalk itinerary!

the BOX gallery, a project of Artists of Rubber City, opened its 2015 exhibit schedule with two exhibits, curated by Rosa Maille: Meditation/Creation, featuring the work of Tom Baldwin and Barbara Sabol, Claudia Berlinski, Mardi Gauer, Clarissa Jakobsons and Laurel Winters, in the front gallery and Peculiar Moments – drawings by Mark Jaroszewski in the small box. On Friday, January 16, there was an opening party featuring poetry readings by Clarissa Jakobsons and Barbara Sabol. The official opening reception will take place on Friday, January 30, 2015.

update:
Anderson Turner, writing in the Sunday, February 8, 2015, edition of the Akron Beacon Journal, reviewed both Meditation/Creation and Peculiar Moments in Finding Beauty in Nature at the BOX gallery.

The weekend following Thanksgiving has traditionally been the start of holiday shopping, but many retailers now welcome shoppers before the dinner dishes are done. American Express started promoting their trademarked Small Business Saturday in 2010 as a shop local event between Black Friday and Cyber Monday and, if the visitors to Summit Artspace are any indication, the respite from the malls and big box stores is a welcome one. Crafty Mart vendors set up at three locations in downtown Akron, one of which was Summit Artspace.

As the booths closed for the day the galleries opened with receptions for new exhibits: Kaleidoscope in the Summit Artspace Gallery and Black and White in the BOX gallery. A third reception celebrated the release of Present Tense, a contemporary art book from Artists of Rubber City.

Scheduling everything on a holiday weekend was brilliant. Next up: the December Artwalk!

What a fine night for an artwalk! Summit Artspace was bustling during the September Downtown Akron Artwalk. The first floor gallery featured Akron Art Prize artwork while Paranormal Paranoia opened at the BOX gallery on the third floor. Adding to the fun on the third floor were four pop-up artists, a tattoo artist and the usual open studios. Yes, we were definitely open!

open!

Two new exhibits, just in time for mid-summer viewing, opened at Summit Artspace on Friday, July 11, 2014.

streetscapes: akron in plein air

Streetscapes: Akron in Plein Air was on display in time for last week’s Downtown Akron Artwalk, but awards were kept secret until last night’s opening reception. Once again, Brian Shellito organized both the downtown painting event and the exhibit itself. Images of artists and artwork are available on his Streetscapes: Akron in Plein Air page.

artists of rubber city 24th annual show

On the third floor, Artists of Rubber City opened the 24th Annual Juried Show in the BOX gallery. Selected artwork can be seen online at the BOX gallery page.

Although the annual juried show is now exhibited in the BOX gallery, owned and managed by Artists of Rubber City, for many years it was displayed in outside venues. The following images are from previous juried shows held at Charles Mayer Studios and Gallery and later at the Mocha Maiden Gallery.

New exhibits opened at Summit Artspace on Friday, January 17.

On the third floor Like but Not Like, fiber work by Carole Pollard and Ted Maringer was installed in the BOX gallery’s front gallery while Greta Ramey’s large scale paintings, Through the Pleats of the Curtain, filled the small box and the outer walls.

The third floor studio artists took their work to the first floor Summit Artspace Gallery for Upstairs Downstairs – Works of Art from the Penthouse. The eight artists, Connie Bloom, Joan Colbert, Bradley Hart, Terry Klausman, Carolyn E. Lewis, Cari Miller, Katina Pastis Radwanski and Ron White, represent a wide range of media including fiber/art quilts, printmaking, photography, metal sculpture, oil painting, mixed media, acrylic painting, drawing and ceramic sculpture in a variety of styles and themes.
