Fresh Art w/Q

The 9th Annual Juried Show of Fresh Art opened with a reception at Summit Artspace on Friday, March 8, 2013. Artists were invited to enter art inspired by the letter Q and somehow there was no semblance of Star Trek, James Bond or Claes Oldenburg among the entries. Judges Jack McWhorter, Kent State University, and Robert Thurmer, Cleveland State University, selected 43 pieces for the exhibit (less than half of the entered work). Upon hearing of the exhibit, kindergarten students at Lippman School created a Q-inspired piece, too.

On the same evening two shows opened with another reception on the third floor of Summit Artspace. The BOX Gallery is featuring the work of Bonnie Stipe and Betsy Cavalier in the big box and Elizabeth Isley within the small box and on adjacent walls.

A couple times a year the Downtown Artwalk falls on a weekend between shows in the galleries at Summit Artspace. This year Artists of Rubber City planned ahead and scheduled a Silent Auction and Raffle in the BOX gallery. Artwork filled the gallery and beyond; proceeds from the event will support AoRC projects and programs.

Carolyn Balogh, a sculptor whose recent work explores the environmental issues affecting native trees, took advantage of the ‘buy-it-now’ price to purchase my print, The Elder Tree.

Adding to the excitement of the evening was the ARTi-Gras theme of this month’s artwalk. Along with the open studios, music, fashion and food were part of the festivities. Classical guitarist, James Marron, and the Kyle Magilavy Jazz Combo played throughout the evening, the Illusion Factory presented a mask-making workshop, Miller South School for the Arts held a fashion show and boutique, and The Orange Truk served Cajun goodies from the parking lot.

The first exhibits of 2013 opened at Summit Artspace on Friday, January 18, with receptions on both the first and third floors.

More Songs about Buildings and Food in the Summit Artspace Gallery features abstract work by Mike Gable and Natalie Petrosky. The title, from the 1978 Talking Heads album, reflects Mike’s references in his work. Natalie’s artwork, in the adjoining small gallery, includes mixed media paintings that she refers to as Treasure Prezzies. Both artists will conduct a drawing workshop on Thursday, January 31, from 6 – 8 p.m. during the newly extended evening hours.

The BOX Gallery, a project of Artists of Rubber City, contains two exhibits. The small box features a solo show by Geraldine Wojno Kiefer, Archipelagic Encounters: The Red Cinder Series. The larger space is filled with a group show of work by Akron Society of Artists members, Friday’s Haze – Friday, as in Friday morning model sessions, and Haze, from the model Angie Haze, an incredible musician who not only posed, but sometimes played music during her sessions. Angie Haze brought both her instruments and her music to the reception and, along with violinist Samuel Salsbury, performed amid her many portraits.

The 2012 exhibition schedule for Summit Artspace Gallery and the BOX gallery is now complete. New shows opened in both galleries on Friday, November 16, and will run through First Night Akron on December 31.

Kaleidoscope, the Alliance for the Visual Arts annual juried exhibition, features 68 pieces selected by jurors, Marina Mangubi and John Smolko. On the building’s third floor, the BOX gallery has two exhibits on view: Change in Common, collage by Shirley Ende-Saxe and painting and sculpture by Katina Pastis Radwanski in the ‘big box’ along with On Pins & Needles, cut paper dimensional work by Kristi Wall in the ‘little box.’

An exhibit of work by members of Artists of Rubber City opened Friday, September 28, in the BOX gallery on the third floor of Summit Artspace. As expected from such an eclectic group, there is an incredible range of media and styles – artwork can be viewed in the album of exhibit photos on Facebook.

On a stifling hot weekend in late July artists took to the sidewalks, plazas and parks of downtown Akron to create works for the Streetscapes: Akron in Plein Air 2012 exhibit. Organized by guest curator Brian Shellito, the exhibit opened on August 10 and will remain in the gallery through Saturday, September 15, 2012. At the same time the tenth anniversary of Summit Artspace is being celebrated with The Postcard Show. Over sixty small artworks (4 x 6 inches) were created and generously donated by artists whose work has appeared at Summit Artspace during its first decade. Each postcard is available for sale for $10 with proceeds to benefit the gallery.

The BOX gallery, a project of Artists of Rubber City, features We the People: 2042, a sound installation by Don Parsisson and Martin Nielsen along with Nothing by Mouth, work by Emily Meister, in the ‘little box.’

All of the exhibits were recently reviewed by Beacon Journal art critic, Dottie Shinn, who wrote, “All of these are handsome shows, meticulously designed, installed and lighted. They demonstrate not only our American resourcefulness and spirit, but also that no matter the size of the venue or space, we can still create big ideas.”
