the time capsule from Time Capsules

Sitting among the sculptures in the current Summit Artspace exhibit, Time Capsules, is an actual time capsule – a wooden crate built to hold artwork and ephemera from local artists and art lovers. Terry Klausman designed and built the container, made arrangements for its storage and constantly encouraged those in the arts community to add a little something to collection. It is now brimming with books, artwork, clippings, photographs and notes. Multi-talented wood sculptor, Tom Baldwin, hand lettered the box and the lid. At the close of the exhibit the crate will be sealed and stored at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, Special Collections, to be opened in fifty years. While the world of 2065 is unknowable, I’m confident that those who open the box will be delighted with the treasure within.

My contribution is a handprinted book of prints from Tree Lines/Dusk + Dawn, with business card, postcards, etc., tucked into the back.

Avenue the cat

Pet portraits are always a lot of fun and Avenue was no exception. This is a small piece, created in mixed media, mainly watercolor and pastel, which, when matted and framed, measures 9 x 12 inches, suitable for display on a wall or shelf.

Of course, my photos are boring compared to his owner’s version, which accompanied her description: “Not unlike Rose from Titanic, Avenue had his portrait done. ‘Draw me like one of your French girls, Joan,’ he requested. And she did. LOVE it!”

“Fill your house with stacks of books, in all the crannies and in all the nooks.”
Dr. Suess

book prints

There are a few additions to the Books in Print series, started last fall, all of which are on display at the studio at Summit Artspace. This has been a fun little diversion – even though many of us enjoy the convenience of digital books, there is something about groups of books collected on shelves or in stacks. Their warmth invites us to choose an old favorite or something new, to leaf through the pages or settle in for a long read.

On the subject of books: Last fall also saw a couple new Little Free Library additions right here in west Akron. Fellow artist and friend, Don Parsisson, designed and built a Cape Cod wood-shingled library (Little Free Library #17708) in front of his home.

Around the same time, Angel Falls Coffee Company installed an A-frame version, designed by artist, Steve Levey, adjacent to the coffee shop. It will be maintained by the Highland Square Branch Library.

2015_timecapsules

Over a year in the making, Time Capsules opened Friday evening at the Summit Artspace Gallery. Artist Terry Klausman proposed the exhibit and invited fellow assemblage artists, Bret Hines and Gwen Waight, to join him in filling the space with sculptures and wall pieces that rework all manner of materials into engaging, often thought-provoking, artwork. Even amid the distractions of opening night festivities, Tim Fitzwater captured some interesting views of the artwork – take a look at ZipperCityBlog.

In keeping with the theme, Terry has installed an actual time-capsule-in-progress in the gallery. Artists are invited to add their own contributions to the visual artists of 2015 collection which will be sealed at the close of the exhibit. The crate will then be stored at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, to be re-opened in fifty years!

country living dec2014

The Tally Birds made an appearance in Ohio Rural Electric Power’s Country Living magazine this month, accompanying Karen Kirsch’s article, As the Crow Flies. Opening with the Reverend Henry Ward Beecher quote, “If men had wings and bore black feathers, few of them would be clever enough to be crows,” Ms. Kirsch includes Corvid folklore, history and behavior in her succinct piece about the blackbirds that make their homes in both rural and urban settings.

You can follow Karen Kirsch’s blog at My Small Country Life.

The studio was in holiday mode for the last artwalk of 2014 – even the blackbirds got in the act. Two handmade ornaments were available this year, a felted wool crow and and his wood, wire and glass cohort.

kenmore high school madrigal singers

The Kenmore High School Madrigals put everyone in the holiday mood with their vocal arrangements of classic carols, while pop-up artists Toni Billick, Leona Bowser, Andrea Cistone, Eileen Matias, Deborah Shapiro, Anne Snyder and Mila Susnjar added some visual variety to the mix.

In September the BOX gallery exhibited Paranormal Paranoia: the other side of Tattoo Art(ists), an intriguing collection of fine art by tattoo artists. During the opening reception and artwalk there were local tattoo artists on hand, along with a raffle for a gift certificate generously donated by Kustom Culture Tattoo & Piercing in Tallmadge, Ohio. As luck (and enablers) would have it, I was the fortunate recipient!! Funny thing, as I started working on sketches, my initial design ideas completely changed – as did the placement. Wendy, owner of Kustom Culture, advised me to go with a larger image and take into consideration that the surface (in this case the forearm) is three-dimensional.

elder tree branch

The final drawing depicts a branch from an Elder Tree, December’s tree in the Celtic lunar zodiac, with berries, leaves and feathers. Wendy’s inking is perfection! The photo below is from the same day – will update in a few weeks.

And, speaking of ink, here are three favorites from my bookshelf – tattoos, tattoo artists and unforgettable stories.

Typical of October, the weather was chilly and changeable this week, but Friday turned out to be picture perfect for some outdoor creativity. Workshop participants experimented with a variety of monotype techniques using water based ink, plexiglass plates and a variety of implements for applying and removing ink. The results were spectacular!

Many more images are available on the Don Drumm Studios & Gallery page on Facebook. Mary took some great photos, including the one at the top of this post.
Thanks to everyone who attended – it was fun!
