Phoebe

Meet Phoebe, a little sweetie who was memorialized in a mixed media commission just in time for the holidays. If there were tears I hope they were happy ones.

Ava

ava

Took a break from black ink and relief prints to work with watercolor, pastel and color (!) in this portrait of Ava, a fawn-colored Doberman.

Commissioned for a gift, there’s a bit of a ‘small world’ story to go with the artwork. The purchaser now lives in China, but the recipient is local. Apparently Ava lived nearby several years ago and participated in a monthly dog walk that was dubbed the Pooch Patrol. One of the evening strolls, and snapshots of the event, inspired my print, Ready to Walk – and there she is, with a couple of her walking buddies! Who knew?!

Avenue, the cat, has a wonderful carpet that provided a colorful backdrop to his recent portrait. Just for fun the image was translated into a block print – less color, more magic!

Avenue the cat

Pet portraits are always a lot of fun and Avenue was no exception. This is a small piece, created in mixed media, mainly watercolor and pastel, which, when matted and framed, measures 9 x 12 inches, suitable for display on a wall or shelf.

Of course, my photos are boring compared to his owner’s version, which accompanied her description: “Not unlike Rose from Titanic, Avenue had his portrait done. ‘Draw me like one of your French girls, Joan,’ he requested. And she did. LOVE it!”

Mina

Not yet a year old, Mina, the German Shepherd, still has a lot of puppy playfulness in her. She is a bit of an art critic and, noting that it is not chewed up, seems to approve of her portrait.

Apparently neither Bram Stoker’s character, nor my cat (definitely named after Mina Harker), inspired her lovely name.

Eddie

Eddie, a little guy with a lot of personality, was a delight to paint! His portrait was commissioned as a holiday gift for his owner, who is probably very familiar with that ornery expression.

Yoshi and Scooby

Okay, casual dog, move over – all of your coolness has been outdone by two smiling Shiba Inus, Yoshi and Scooby! This pair put on their happiest faces for their portrait.

Apparently Yoshi, Scooby and Joey (see previous post) are cousins – their owners are sisters! Joey joined them in this holiday photo . . .

Joey

Do you think Joey knows just how cute he is? His endearing expression must win over everyone he meets. Sunshiny colors seemed perfect for such a sweet little pup! His name is much shorter than his breed – he’s a Peekaboo Pekingese Poodle.
