What a feast for the senses! When the epiphyllum blooms the deck is redolent with its heavenly scent. Knowing that it will be gone by morning only adds to its allure.

The flower only lasts one night, but a painting keeps the memory alive. From many years ago this watercolor was inspired by one of the early blooms on the first epiphyllum I owned.

Once again Don Drumm Studios & Gallery is celebrating National American Craft Week with a full schedule of workshops featuring ceramics, mosaics, weaving and more. This year I added a new focus to my monoprint class – Folding an Artful Book.

Working within the allotted time (2 hours), and knowing that printing ink (even water based) can be slow drying, called for some changes in materials. Inexpensive tube watercolors replaced the ink and the garden was raided for a selection of leaves and plants. The X-book design, from Making Handmade Books by Alisa Gorden, was chosen for its handsome form that belies its simple construction.

There is much to be said for a project that appeals to artists at all levels – this one was basic enough for a beginner, yet adaptable for those with plenty of visual art experience. In other words, it’s a keeper! I learned that the finely textured underside of a hydrangea leaf is great for printing and mint adds a bit of aromatherapy to the process.

epi bud

It’s been years since the Night Blooming Cereus, Epiphyllum oxypetalum, bloomed, but tonight’s the night! The spectacular flower and heavenly scent definitely make it worth staying up late. My patience may be further rewarded – I spied four more tiny buds!

Ava

Took a break from black ink and relief prints to work with watercolor, pastel and color (!) in this portrait of Ava, a fawn-colored Doberman.

Commissioned for a gift, there’s a bit of a ‘small world’ story to go with the artwork. The purchaser now lives in China, but the recipient is local. Apparently Ava lived nearby several years ago and participated in a monthly dog walk that was dubbed the Pooch Patrol. One of the evening strolls, and snapshots of the event, inspired my print, Ready to Walk – and there she is, with a couple of her walking buddies! Who knew?!
