deceptive welcome

Three of the prints in the As Potent as a Charm exhibit will feature common landscape plants (see perilous plantings for line drawings) who keep their toxicity well hidden. The proof print above is of a Rhododendron in A Deceptive Welcome.

The block in progress shows the ubiquitous Yew, Taxus baccata, in Pleasant Valley; Oleander, Nerium oleander, guards the gate in Be Still.

deceitful charm

There is a latecomer to the Solanaceae family prints – the group of five has expanded to six. The ‘table’ prints can now form a triptych, with the addition of Deceitful Charm. This piece includes a sphinx moth fluttering around a mysterious pairing of Jimson Weed, Datura stramonium, and Chinese Lantern, Physalis alkekengi.

angelstrumpet

Fanfare, please . . . Angel’s Trumpet, Brugmansia suaveleons, is finally printed and ready to be framed for inclusion in my upcoming exhibit, As Potent as a Charm. The fanfare because the sketches were complete in August!

Three prints from the ‘pod’ series were recently loaned to the Akron Community Foundation. Each features a linocut print within a woodcut of a pod from the Chinese Lantern plant.

Foxglove
Digitalis purpurea

“The operation of this herb, internally taken, is often violent, even in small doses: it is best therefore not to meddle with it, lest the cure should end in the churchyard.”

castor leaf print

Making leaf prints at last week’s workshop was inspiring, even for the instructor! This Castor Bean, Ricinus communis, leaf was printed with oil base ink on mulberry hosho.

Once again Don Drumm Studios & Gallery is celebrating National American Craft Week with a full schedule of workshops featuring ceramics, mosaics, weaving and more. This year I added a new focus to my monoprint class – Folding an Artful Book.

Working within the allotted time (2 hours), and knowing that printing ink (even water based) can be slow drying, called for some changes in materials. Inexpensive tube watercolors replaced the ink and the garden was raided for a selection of leaves and plants. The X-book design, from Making Handmade Books by Alisa Gorden, was chosen for its handsome form that belies its simple construction.

There is much to be said for a project that appeals to artists at all levels – this one was basic enough for a beginner, yet adaptable for those with plenty of visual art experience. In other words, it’s a keeper! I learned that the finely textured underside of a hydrangea leaf is great for printing and mint adds a bit of aromatherapy to the process.

Sometimes cutting blocks is simply . . . cutting blocks.

night lights drawing

The Solanaceae prints seemed complete when the fifth one was printed, but apparently there will be a new addition to the family. Envisioning a triptych, I decided to add another pairing that plays off of the tabletop motif of two of the earlier prints. When complete this sixth image will feature Datura stramonium and Physalis alkekengi, Chinese Lantern plant.
