As noted in a past blog post, Landscape Perils, the yew is one of those “plantings that add a hint of danger to the structure of the garden.” In Pleasant Valley appearances deceive: the ubiquitous landscape/foundation plant of suburbia, the Yew, seems ordinary, but all parts of Taxus baccata are poisonous.

The stock pot was cooking! Various alum-soaked papers and leaves were layered atop an old steamer basket and simmered for a couple hours. So many possibilities!

What a feast for the senses! When the epiphyllum blooms the deck is redolent with its heavenly scent. Knowing that it will be gone by morning only adds to its allure.
The flower only lasts one night, but a painting keeps the memory alive. From many years ago this watercolor was inspired by one of the early blooms on the first epiphyllum I owned.
